Afterglow at Braun Court/Aut Bar 8:30 to 10:00 PM.

May 24, 2011 — Ann Arbor, Mich. — Country artist Paul Burch headlines the Kerrytown District Association’s fifth annual Nashbash, which has a tradition of showcasing the music of Nashville. Set in the Ann Arbor Farmers Market, the festival features a roster of first-class national and local performers in an intimate neighborhood atmosphere, making Kerrytown the place to be on a Thursday evening during the dog days of summer. The artistic force behind Nashbash is Whit Hill, a longtime member of the Ann Arbor arts community who now lives in Nashville. She and her band Whit Hill and the Postcards join the Nashbash roster, which also includes returning favorites

Pam Kennedy Boylan and Steve Mitchell (both from Nashville) promoting their new CD Haphazzard, as well as local acts to be announced.

Nashbash is free and open to the public. Contributing to the festival atmosphere, the Ann Arbor Artisans Market along with the Trunkers of Trunkapalooza will be operating under the Farmers Market canopy. Food and drinks (including beer and wine) will be available, including barbeque served up by Aut Bar owners Keith Orr and Martin Contrares. Immediately following Nashbash, the Aut Bar (315 Braun Court) will host an Afterglow party from 8:30 to 10:00 pm where many favorite locals will take the mic on the courtyard stage.

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Paul Burch and his band WPA Ballclub arrived in Nashville in the early 90’s, drawing world press to its live honkytonk music scene and helping to sound the arrival of Americana in Music City USA. Critics have praised Burch’s albums as “music that sounds thoroughly modern but completely unlike contemporary country” (USA Today) and Entertainment Weekly has called him "a modern day Jimmie Rodgers". Burch’s 2009 album Still Your Man, produced with Dennis Crouch and Jen Gunderman, features guests Kelly Hogan and Tim O’Brien and earned a place on the Grammy ballot for “Best Americana Album of 2009”.

Whit Hill and the Postcards features singer/songwriter Whitley Hill, singer/keyboardist/guitarist/husband Al Hill,

bassist Patrick Prouty, and drummer Chuck Navyac. Driven by Whitley Hill, the Postcards was formed in 2001 in order to bring interesting, literate, and unexpectedly beautiful alt-country music to the greater Detroit area. Hill, well-known for her versatile creative talents, spent much of her creative life in Ann Arbor but recently moved with her husband Al Hill to Nashville where they are quickly becoming a vital part of music community.

Pam Kennedy Boylan grew up in Texas and moved to Nashville nearly 15 years ago to join the city’s renowned singer-songwriter scene. She performed in the acclaimed musical Warrior by songwriter Marcus Hummon in 2001 and has since performed backup vocals for a variety of musicians around Nashville. Boylan has appeared in many of the Nashville music rooms such as the Douglas Corner Café, the BlueBird, and the Wildhorse Saloon, where she opened for the band Sons of the Desert. She has also appeared as a featured actress in many independent films that were presented at various Sundance Festivals around the country. Nashville-based guitarist and composer Steve Mitchell has toured extensively around the world, performing in Canada, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway. He is a former member and songwriter for the Juno-Award Winning band The Paperboys and has performed multiple times at Nashville’s world-famous Bluebird Café. Several of Mitchell’s compositions were featured in the award-winning documentary The Yenissey River Adventure. He appeared as a member of a band in the movie Lunch With Charles, starring Bif Naked.

Traverse City, MI- Lake Ann resident Brandy Wheeler has debuted a new iPhone App called ‘Traverse Traveler.’ The free app is designed to help visitors to the Traverse City area connect with wineries, restaurants and attractions.

Traverse Traveler features the best destinations in the Traverse City region, in a convenient interactive resource and can be downloaded at the Apple app store or at: http://TraverseTraveler.com

Visitors and locals can use Traverse Traveler to:

· Research local hotels, pinpoint their location on Google maps

· Call to book a reservation for a hotel or restaurant

· Plan a wine tour with driving directions from one winery to the next

· Find a nearby attraction such as a lighthouse or a museum

· Find the quickest route from the hotel to the ski lodge, with point-by-point directions

· Discover local events and buy tickets before leaving home

There are thousands of apps out there, many of which promote restaurants, movie theaters or general information about an area. So what makes Traverse Traveler unique?

Descriptions include information many other apps leave out such as photos, hours, admission price or specials. Since it was designed and written by locals, Wheeler believes it’ll have the local features and insight others can’t possibly know about.

Listings are ordered by proximity to the iPhone user. So if you’re hanging out on Leelanau County, the listings nearest to you come up first. This is helpful for finding a hotel for the night, or the closest bar.

Wheeler says, “Our maps and directions will make it easy to navigate from one location to the next. You can hop from Black Star Farms Winery to Bel Lago Vineyard without getting lost along the way. Plus, the visitor will be able to find the out-of-the-way restaurant or local hotspot that’s just off the beaten path.”

“Another cool feature,” says Wheeler, “If you want to tell your friends about a great microbrew you just tasted, you can post it to Facebook or Twitter or even email info to your friends without leaving the app.”

Events are organized by date to let you know what’s going on while you’re in town.

‘Near Me’ feature pinpoints the 25 listings closest to the iPhone user, from within all categories.

The Traverse Traveler iPhone app was produced by Wheeler’s Mealtickets & Unusual Ideas company, a 10-year-old Traverse City marketing service with “little card displays” in over 70 locations throughout Grand Traverse, Benzie and Leelanau County. The displays promote area restaurants and attractions, with pocket-sized folding cards that visitors pick-up at hotel front desks. "The number one reason our little cards are so popular among visitors is their size. Travelers love them because they fit in their pocket or purse…right next to their phone. The iPhone app is a natural extension of our services. As a small business owner I work hard to keep up with technology and the needs of my customers. The app is a great way to do just that," says Wheeler.

The release of Traverse Traveler arrived just in time for holiday vacationers to download and explore before visiting northern Michigan during the Christmas break. Traverse City is a year-round Pure Michigan destination. Millions of travelers flock to this area each year drawn to the beauty of its natural resources, and the character of each community. From distinctive restaurants and award-winning wineries, to family-friendly activities and day trips, each destination offers an authentic glimpse into the local lifestyle.

About Mealtickets & Unusual Ideas®

Mealtickets & Unusual Ideas® mission is to provide Traverse area visitors with useful information and directions to local restaurants and attractions, in a colorful, convenient and portable way. And that’s just what the "Wine Gypsy" is all about.

The brainchild of Ann Arbor musician Kitty Donohoe, the concert-with-wine concept is perfect for the holidays, an office party, or any place where adults gather to have fun.

An Emmy award-winning singer-songwriter with a national reputation, Donohoe is also something of a wine expert, and she recently decided to bring those two worlds together. The idea is simple – Donohoe comes to your home or business, bringing a selection of wines and a guitar. She then entertains your guests with songs, pouring tastings, pointing out the nuances of each wine.

Last year Donohoe partnered with Jackson, Michigan winery Sandhill Crane Vineyards, a winery on the Pioneer Wine Trail that winds through southeast Michigan. "I have worked in the wine trade periodically for a decade," she said, "but I never really appreciated Michigan wines until I started getting to know the Sandhill Crane offerings. There is a perception that wines from the midwest states are somehow less sophisticated or appealing than those from other areas of the country. Or that they’re very sweet. That isn’t true at all."

One thing Donohoe likes about Sandhill Crane is their commitment to using all local produce in their wines. If the grapes aren’t grown on their own estates, they are purchased from a radius of about 150 miles or so from Jackson, all in Michigan. Even the honey for their meads is local. “This local focus means that the Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, doesn’t taste like one you’d find in California – it tastes like a Michigan Cab. It’s a complex wine with its own unique character.” At a Wine Gypsy party Donohoe brings wines that cover the spectrum from bone-dry whites and reds, to semi-dry’s and sweets, finishing with an award-winning raspberry dessert wine. And chocolate. “The combo of chocolate with the raspberry dessert wine is amazing.”

Donohoe, whose music has been described as “rich, earthy and compelling,” has been a performing songwriter for decades with several CDs to her credit. In 2008 Donohoe performed at the Pentagon for the dedication of the 911 Memorial. Says Donohoe, “I enjoy finding songs to pair with the wines, it’s like introducing two of my friends who’ve never met to one another.”

NOVI, MI – The Midwest’s largest collection of motorcycle vendors under one roof will converge with thousands of "bikers" on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Rock Financial Showplace to buy, sell and swap motorcycles, parts, accessories and experiences.

Spring is around the corner and bikers with “cabin fever” turning to “Spring fever” will arrive in droves clad from head-to-toe in leather and sporting bandanas, vests cluttered with pins collected from ‘rides’ or events from across the country, T-shirts that make a statement or prove "I’ve been there and seen that," says event director Chad Dutmers.

Michigan’s own Ron Finch also known as “The Motorcycle Artist” will be displaying his newest creation called “The Outsider.” It’s Finch’s first ever bike with a side car. It has a 100 cubic inch Crazy Horse engine with round cylinders and heads and a Michigan built Evil Belt Drive.

Says Dutmers, “Ron used gears, wrenches, chains and rod work for the frame. It has spoked wheels with rubber powder coat. It looks like the spokes are coming right out of the tire itself. The exhausts are a powder coated silver color. It’s pretty cool. Ron Finch is considered one of the premiere custom motorcycle builders of all time, we are truly privileged to have this work of fine craftsmanship here. It’s a must see,” adds Dutmer.

The Outsider is making its Michigan public debut at the Giant Motorcycle Swap Meet which for the past 35 years, is famous for offering "everything for rider or machine"…for men and women who love to ride motorcycles and the lifestyle…whether it’s street, dirt or touring. The hard-core biker or the casual rider will find what they need and at "swap meet prices."

When riding season begins bikers begin the process of replacing worn, damaged or obsolete chrome, paint, seats, parts, tires and apparel. You don’t find these items at the mall, you find them at the Giant Motorcycle Swap Meet.

“With nearly one out of every four bikers in the U.S. living in Michigan and its four border states, the nine swap meets we sponsor give bikers the chance to be around other bikers and to support the economic interests that are vital to keeping the industry strong,” stresses Dutmers. “We love to showcase Michigan made bike builders and suppliers as much as possible. Our bread and butter is the Michigan Biker.”

The swap meet will feature the largest collection of motorcycle vendors under one roof in the Midwest. Cyclists attending will see new ’10 bikes as well as used bikes – street, dirt, metric, touring, cruising, trikes, choppers, custom bikes, and trailers.

Thousands of motorcycle buyers are expected to pack the 95,000-plus square foot exhibition area from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for ages 6-12. Car Parking is $5. People who want to skip the lines and get in 30 minutes earlier can buy tickets in advance online at www.motorcycleswap.com The Rock Financial Showplace is located at 46100 Grand River Ave in Novi and can be accessed using three convenient exits off I-96 – exits 159, 160 or 162.

Alex Blake (bass) and Neil Clarke (percussion) join Weston as the African Rhythms Trio at Kerrytown Concert House on Saturday, March 20, with sets at 7 and 9 p.m. This concert is sponsored by the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

A Brooklyn native, Weston grew up merely steps away from jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Miles Davis, as well as his cousin Wynton Kelly. Thelonius Monk was one of Weston’s greatest influences, having studied with him informally for three years. "He was the most original I ever heard," Weston writes. "He played like they must have played in Egypt 5000 years ago." Weston progressed with his jazz career into the 1950s and 60s, performing with a number of jazz combos, including a sextet with saxophonist Booker Ervin. Several of Weston’s originals that came out this group have become jazz standards, including “Little Niles” and “Hi-Fly” (in reference to his towering 6’8” height).

But while mastering the jazz idiom, Weston has been devoted to the music of his African ancestry. His dedication is due in large part to his father, Frank Edward Weston, who told his son that he was, "an African born in America." "He told me I had to learn about myself and about him and about my grandparents," Weston said in an interview, "and the only way to do it was I’d have to go back to the motherland one day." Weston spent a great deal of time performing in Africa while absorbing the style. He opened a nightclub in Morocco in the late 1960s, and also toured the continent. It was in Marrakech, Morocco that Weston collaborated with Gnawa people, whose spiritual music is often used in healing ceremonies. He continues his relationship with the Gnawa music masters, and has since recorded with them. He released “The Splendid Master Gnawa Musicians of Morocco” in 1994 on the Verve label, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album the following year.

Alex Blake, bass

Born in Panama and raised Brooklyn, bassist Alex Blake was one of the major proponents of the fusion movement in the late 1970s. Most of the people who work with Blake consider him an entire rhythm section on his own: his playing evokes rhythmic guitar, steady drumming, and a lyrical bass line — all in the action of two hands. Blake currently enjoys the co-creative efforts of straight-ahead/fusion great Tommy Campbell. In addition to collaborating on each other’s own projects, they perform together with The Manhattan Transfer.

Neil Clarke, percussion

Neil Clarke has been a student of percussion for more than 35 years. Having traveled extensively, Clarke has had the opportunity to study and collaborate with masters worldwide. He has had longstanding performing, touring and recording relationships with many notable artists, including Harry Belafonte, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Miriam Makeba, Letta Mbulu, Carlos Garnet and Paul Winter, to name a few. Clarke has also performed in the Broadway production of “Timbuktu” and in the feature film Beat Street.

Viewers of "Up From Ashes," will relive every aspect of the building experience including the creative design process and stressful crunch of deadlines. The film includes perspectives from the architects, the library director and skilled craftsmen. Developers took a unique approach by harvesting hundreds of ash trees that were devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer and reused the trees in the building.

The "Up From Ashes" story was researched and chronicled in a documentary produced by KDN Films Inc., in Madison Heights, Michigan. The hour-long documentary will be broadcast on Michigan Public Television stations from Detroit to Marquette throughout the month of October. Michigan PBS stations include WTVS, WFUM, WCMU, WKAR, WNMU, WDCQ and WGVU.

KDN Films captured each step of the construction combining both primitive and modern construction methods. Viewers are treated to a behind the scenes view of the drawing board designs, deadlines and 1-ton draft horses harvesting the lumber. "Up From Ashes" audience members also experience the anxiety of the development team when design and structure challenges arise.

"Our viewers will enjoy this intriguing film," said Jeff Forster, vice president of production and station enterprises for WTVS Channel 56 – Detroit Public Television.

According to Bill Kubota, "Up From Ashes" Director and Cinematographer, "The film really gives viewers a feel of what went into this project. We started with axes and draft horses and ended with modern methods and fine craftsmanship. The reuse of the ash trees was incredible."
