SALINE, MI (November 10, 2009) – DesignHub, Inc. (www.design-hub.com) of Saline, MI has developed a custom report and a promotional brochure for SRLSonline (www.srlsonline.org), a Web-based survey that helps identify the leadership strengths of college students and other participants, and points them to their opportunities for leadership growth.
SRLSonline uses the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) to measure students’ leadership capacities on the eight core values of the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development. Leadership educators use the survey to help teach socially responsible leadership, benchmark their students’ leadership capacities against national norms, and assess the effectiveness of their leadership education programs.
SCM’s “eight c’s” include individual vales (consciousness of self, congruence, and commitment), group values (common purpose, collaboration, and controversy with civility), and a society/community value (citizenship), along with an overall organizing value (change).
SCM describes leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-driven process, instead of a title or a position. In this context, a “leader” is anyone who wants to work with others to make a difference. The model’s central principles – social responsibility and change for the common good – are assessed through the eight core SCM values that describe a student’s level of self-awareness and ability to work with others.
SRLS measures a process of socially responsible leadership for college students, based on SCM. The scale is used in SRLSonline and as the core of the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL; www.leadershipstudy.net), an annual, national study of leadership development among college students.
SRLSonline is a partnership of the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (www.nclp.umd.edu), Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland (www.union.umd.edu), Survey Sciences Group, LLC (www.surveysciences.com), and the Center for Student Studies (www.studentstudies.com).
SRLSonline is available under an individual license, site licenses for groups of participants, and research licenses for those who wish to include SRLS scales in their own research instruments. Institutional licenses are administered through MSL.
DesignHub edited the content and designed and laid out the 16-page custom report that each SRLSonline participant receives after completing the survey. At the center of the report are the participant’s scores on the eight core SCM values, with explanations, analyses, tips for improvement, and lists of additional resources for leadership education. The report also provides background on SCM, SRLS, and the SRLSonline instrument.
The full-color, eight-panel brochure developed by DesignHub promotes SRLSonline as an essential teaching, evaluation, and assessment tool for leadership educators.
